February of 2020 feels so long ago, or just like yesterday, I can’t decide. Hosting the Sustainability Task Force at my home to witness first-hand an energy audit was likely one of the last “normal” things we did as a group. What a fun way to learn about the exact process, what types of recommendations they would make, and services they could provide while on site.

The members of the task force watched as the energy expert toured the home and pointed out the many areas of energy inefficiencies that existed in my home. The energy was escaping through gaps in my exterior doors, in the open area above my furnace that was not insulated from the attic above and most shocking: through the can light in my kitchen! He held a flame next to these areas and showed us how it flickered as the air escaped…taking energy along with it.

In addition, an infrared camera was used on the walls of the home to detect if adequate insulation was present. An inspection of the furnace was completed to ensure safe levels of carbon monoxide. I live in an older home since remodeled, but there are many areas to yet improve – especially to prevent the wasting of precious energy = MONEY!

Talking about and implementing sustainable practices is here – NOW. REALTORS® plays an important role in this movement and has a responsibility to be a part of these conversations.

Columbia Gas offers a complete list of partnering businesses that can offer discounts to consumers and some may be offered free of charge, like installing a new thermostat. The $50 charge for the audit can be waived when you allow these providers to contact you for a quote.
