Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

commitment

For Columbus REALTORS®, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion is not just a project for us, it is who we are. Our commitment to cultivate an environment within our Association where we accept, value, and celebrate the differences of all who make up our real estate family and the central Ohio community is strong.

Diversity & Inclusion is a robust part of our Strategic Long-Range Plan. Through our Equity & Impact Department, we are broadening our reach, raising awareness, and working with affiliate organizations and institutes, city officials, community leaders and stakeholders, colleges and universities to find innovative, impactful solutions that address issues of diversity and inclusion, fair and affordable housing and sustainability within our community.

In mirroring what has been happening in our country, we have also taken a strong stance on anti-racism, and our members have stepped up to offer innovative programming ideas to include in an Action Plan which supports commitments made in our anti-racism stance. These ideas run the gamut from a book club to engage in open honest conversations about race, racism, diversity and inclusion, implicit bias training and educational opportunities, to recognizing Most Valuable Players (MVPs), not by sales but by how much they are being intentional on implementing diversity and being inclusive, and so much more.

As REALTORS®, we are sworn to uphold a strict Code of Ethics and Article 10 of that Code specifically states that Realtors® shall not deny equal professional services, be parties to any plan or agreement to discriminate and/or in their real estate employment practices discriminate against any person or persons on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status. national origin, sexual orientation, or gender identity.

Being a diverse Association that reflects our emerging communities, fair and equitable housing opportunities and sustainability are all issues important to real estate. Taking the lead on advocating for a more inclusive Association and central Ohio community is not only the right thing to do, it is good business, essential for the growth of our industry, our members, and our community.

We hope the information and resources provided here will be helpful to you in working with buyers and sellers, and colleagues from all walks of life.

The Color of Law

In this groundbreaking history of the modern American metropolis, Richard Rothstein, a leading authority on housing policy, explodes the myth that America's cities came to be racially divided through de facto segregation-that is, through individual prejudices, income differences, or the actions of private institutions like banks and real estate agencies. Rather, The Color of Law incontrovertibly makes clear that it was de jure segregation-the laws and policy decisions passed by local, state, and federal governments-that actually promoted the discriminatory patterns that continue to this day.

A Most Beautiful Thing

The moving true story of a group of young men growing up on Chicago's West side who form the first all-black high school rowing team in the nation, and in doing so not only transform a sport, but their lives. A Most Beautiful Thing is the inspiring true story about the most unlikely band of brothers that form a family, and forever change a sport and their lives for the better.

Begin Again

In this story of James Baldwin’s crucible, Dr. Glaude suggests that when the promise of Black Lives Matter and the attempt to achieve a new America has been challenged, we can find hope and guidance though our own after times. It is an intense exploration that lays bare the tangled web of race, trauma, and memory, and a powerful interrogation of what we all must ask of ourselves to call forth a new America.
