This is one of my favorite times of the year and for a lot of reasons. My girls are back in school and their day is more structured, it’s football season (Go Bucks and Go Bengals), and the weather gets a little cooler, etc., etc.
Back to school time also reminds that it’s time for me to set some goals on what I’d like to learn this school year. Learning not just for my business either. What can I learn more about that would make me a better husband, father, friend and person? I’m going to share with you my goals for the 2017-2018 school year.
I want to learn how to speak Spanish. I took Spanish I and II in high school over 30 years ago and my grasp on the language has slipped quite a bit. I realized this when I tested my Spanish in Mexico last month while on vacation. “Una mas cerveza por favor” was the best I could come up with! Patty is in a similar spot with her Spanish (although better than mine) and we committed to it as a couple.
I want to learn more about rowing as a sport. My daughter Paige has been a rower with the Westerville Crew for a year now and I just do not know much about it.
I want to learn how to cope when your child leaves the nest for college. Claire is starting her senior year at New Albany and I’m getting teary-eyed just typing this out!
I want to learn how to better control my calendar so I can spend more time with my friends and family. Our business makes this one a big challenge because of the hectic pace and around the clock nature of it.
For my business, I want to learn how to be a better mentor. With 25 years of experience in the housing industry, I want to give back to another generation of REALTORS® and share my knowledge of what to do and what not to do to make this a long lasting and successful career.
Many of you know about the Columbus REALTORS®’ initiative to create a mentoring education program in 2017. It’s an initiative that has nearly been completed. In fact, by the time you read this, the Certified Real Estate Mentor Designation class will be completed and ready to teach in the fourth quarter. I am so proud of the task force for working so hard to make it happen and I owe each of them my gratitude!
I hope you will all take some time to think about what you want to learn this year. It’s always time to Learn, Earn and Give Back!
