Governmental Affairs Committee looking toward fall elections

The 2017 Government Affairs Forum Committee kicked off Spring by hosting the Joint Congressional Roundtable on April 20 at Columbus REALTORS®. Our panelists Congressmen Pat Tiberi and Steve Stivers and Congresswoman Joyce Beatty were in attendance and again demonstrated that despite being from differing political parties and having differences of opinion, they could disagree with one another without being disagreeable. I moderated the panel and the topics discussed included subjects such as Tax Reform, The Consumer Finance Protection Bureau, and GSE Reform. The panelists were well received by the audience and the room was packed with approximately 175 of our members.

In May, a delegation of leaders from our Association as well as additional REALTORS® from our area visited Washington, DC for the Mid-Year Legislative Meetings and Trade Expo, where they attended special issues forums, committee meetings, legislative activities and the industry trade show. While there, we also met with Senators Ron Portman and Sherrod Brown, Congressmen Tiberi and Stivers and Congresswoman Beatty to discuss items of concern to our industry. Among those items discussed were:

  • Tax reform proposals which would lower the tax rates and raise the standard deduction by limiting real estate tax provisions.
  • The importance of 1031 Exchanges in encouraging economic growth by allowing real estate held as investments to be exchanged for property of a like kind on a tax deferred basis.
  • The need to reverse the decline in first time homeownership. Homeownership was at a 50 year low in 2016. There are benefits to homeownership beyond the bricks and mortar of a house. Homeownership also facilitates benefits to communities such as increases in civic involvement and an increase in neighborhood stability.

With our year half way over, our committee is now focused on elections this fall and look forward to sharing with you upcoming events in the near future!
